Summer Reading Letter to Parents:

We are very excited to announce our summer reading program here at Pittsgrove Township School District. While summer is a time for students to relax and participate in recreational activities with friends, it should also be a time to entertain oneself with a great book.
The summer season presents the opportunity for rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation. It is also the ideal time to support the literacy skills of our students while fostering a community of readers in our schools. Studies have shown that when children read each day, they increase their vocabulary development, build fluency, and improve their comprehension skills. If children do not read during the summer months, they will lose a great deal of progress made
during the school year. Children who read during the summer start school ready to continue their progress.
Throughout this summer, our middle school students will read and enjoy one or two books. Specific book lists and assignments for each grade level can be found on the PTMS Media Center website. Additionally, students have been
given their specific assignment and grade level book list from their current English teacher. Completed summer reading assignments are due the first week of school. The summer reading program is a course requirement for your
child’s English Language Arts class.
In order to ensure all students have access to summer reading books, we have organized “curbside” book pick-up days where students and parents can reserve books from the PTMS Media Center and pick them up at the school’s
main entrance. If you would like to check out a book from the PTMS Media Center, please attend one of the following “curbside” book pick-up days:
• Wednesday, June 17th from 8:00am to 11:30am
• Thursday, June 18th from 4:00pm to 6:30pm
If you’re checking out a book from the PTMS Media Center, please reserve your book(s) online in advance. We have included the step-by-step directions for this process on page two of this letter.
Additionally, we have organized a list of websites where students may access a digital version (eBook or audiobook) of their selected book(s) for free. You can access this document on our district website as well as the PTMS Media
Center’s website. Finally, if open to the public during the summer, you can access summer reading books at public libraries and local bookstores. You may also find books on Amazon and other online booksellers.
Should you have any questions about our summer reading program, please contact our Library Media Center Specialist, Ms. Jessica Downer ( or you may contact my office directly.
Please add summer reading to your child’s list of adventures to experience and enjoy during this time of year. I wish you and your family a safe and rejuvenating summer season.
